The Gospel of John was written, John tells us, “so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name” (John 20:31). John ends that Gospel with an account of our Lord Jesus Christ’s resurrection and a description of several significant consequences of His resurrection. Jesus is the one who defeated death – He rose from the grave and lives forever. And His risen life has an explicit purpose, even as His life of ministry did. He lives to call His people to Himself and to send them out into the world with a message of forgiveness and salvation. This is the same message today that it was thousands of years ago. It is a call to sinners to put their faith and trust in the One who has died to purchase forgiveness. It is a call to grace and hope. When we understand who Jesus is and what He came to accomplish, we realize that “He Must Rise” (John 20:1-31).
