The family is often called the foundation of society and community. Study after study shows that children need fathers and mothers, and that fathers and mothers need to love each other to be a benefit and blessing to their children. But the family is not just a pragmatic good. It is not the most efficient or effective way to build a civilization. The family is God’s design for His creation. From the Garden of Eden, God constructed the family as the way for human beings to love, nurture, and support eadch other. The Lord has given us the family because it reflects the greater relationship that He has with His people. We are not just saved from our sins by the work of Jesus – we are brought into the family of God. By His grace, God brings us to Himself and showers love upon us. In order to understand how our families should function, we must look at “The Model: the Family of God” (1 John 2:28-3:3).
