Thank God for the Spirit!

January 13, 2019 Speaker: Fred Greco Series: Romans

Topic: AM Service Passage: Romans 8:26–27

In the midst of the trials of life, Paul encouraged us to look to the glory that will be revealed. Looking to Christ and His glory is the surest way to put suffering in perspective. It is very rare, however, for the Bible to give us only one encouragement; and so, Paul now moves on, reminding us that we have recourse to prayer when we are downcast and disheartened. But the Bible never just tells us to “do better,” it reminds us that our strength is in the work of the Lord. As the Lord said to Zechariah, “not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit” will we move forward. The Holy Spirit is the One who guides and directs us in prayer, interceding for us even when we do not know the words to speak. What a blessing this is! For the Holy Spirit knows the will of God for us – because He is God! Do not forget this great work of the Spirit, but instead “Thank God for the Spirit!” (Romans 8:26-27)

I. The Spirit Helps
A. We Are Weak
B. He Intercedes

II. The Spirit Knows
A. He Knows Our True Needs
B. He Knows the Will of God

Questions for consideration: (1) How often do you think about the ministry of the Holy Spirit to you? Why do you think that it is not on your mind more often? (2) Why is it so important for us to know that the Holy Spirit is interceding for us? How is that intercession different from the intercession of Christ? How is it similar? (3) What is so crucial about the knowledge of the Holy Spirit – both of our needs and God’s will?
