The Betrayer

Topic: AM Service Passage: John 13:18–30
When we think about evil in the world, we often assume it is easy to spot. Wickedness must surely be abnormal, we conclude. And that comfort us because we are normal, aren’t we? So, we reassure ourselves that all is well and that we have no need to be worried about the state of our soul. And there is a second assumption we make – that if we are able to apply just the right amount of persuasion to others about Jesus, they will repent and believe. The story of Judas corrects our thinking. Judas was not the “odd one” of the disciples. He was not the one voted “most likely to betray Jesus.” In fact, he was respectable; he was the one who kept the moneybag. But Jesus knew everything. And Jesus still reached out to Judas, calling him back. On that dark night, Jesus called out and warned the other disciples about “The Betrayer” so that they would understand that He was, and is, always sovereign and in control. (John 13:18-30)
