Have you ever forgotten anything? Ever left anything undone that was so important that you were embarrassed to be found out? If so, you can imagine the shock and horror of Joseph and Mary when they discovered that they had left their son – the promised Messiah – behind in Jerusalem! How they rushed to go back and find him! After looking and looking, they found him in the temple, talking with the teachers. It is hard to know who was more surprised: Jesus’ parents, or the teachers who were being instructed by this remarkable youth. Once again Luke gives us a different perspective on Jesus – never was there anyone like Him. Even from His earliest days, He was obedient to His heavenly Father, at all times “About His Father’s Business” (Luke 2:41-52).

Questions for consideration: (1) Why is it important for Luke to share details with us that show the “ordinariness” of Jesus? (2) Do you have a desire to be with God’s people and learn God’s Word? How can this passage help you to further that desire? (3) What does this story of Jesus’ obedience tell you about your own need for obedience? Is it what you thought at first?
