The Reality of Jesus
Topic: AM Service Passage: Luke 24:36–53
In the crush and busyness of life, it is sometimes easy to lose sight of Jesus. So often the world wants to present Jesus as something of a will-o-wisp; a shadowy figure that is not quite real. They will talk about the “spirit” of Christmas or Easter, but want no part of the very real baby in the manger or the one who is risen from the dead. But Jesus is not some kind of sentiment for our affections – He is the very real God-man who was born of a virgin, lived a perfect life among real people, died upon a cross, rose from the dead, and ascended into glory. The faith of those who follow Jesus is a faith rooted in fact, history, and reality. Luke shows us the truth of this in the conclusion of his gospel, where a very real Jesus sits with His disciples, eats, and proclaims the gospel that they are to take throughout the world. Jesus is real, and no matter what others may claim, He is the hope of the world – ascended to heaven to return once again, not as a babe, but as a King! We can have hope today because of “The Reality of Jesus” (Luke 24:36-53).

Questions for consideration: (1) Why do you think it was so hard for the disciples to believe what had happened? In what ways has Jesus given you reassurance of His work in your life? (2) What should empower us to be witnesses of Jesus’ message? What are the hardest barriers to telling others about the message of Jesus? (3) Why is the ascension an essential part of the gospel? How is Jesus’ rule a blessing to you?
