Do not fear or be dismayed
By now I imagine most of you have seen or heard of the decision of the U.S. Supreme Court authored by Justice Kennedy forcing homosexual “marriage” on all the States. (Justice Roberts' dissent is found on page 40 of the pdf, Justice Scalia's on page 69, Justice Thomas' on page 78, and Justice Alito's on page 96).
While this is discouraging, I would advise you neither to be surprised nor despondent. We should not be surprised because this is the way or the world that does not hear the Word of God. The best government or the most careful Constitution cannot root out mankind’s greatest problem: sin. We have to remember that sin affects not only our standing before God, but it also affects our minds, emotions, and wills. Sin makes us no longer sure about what is right and true; it causes us to get caught up in the fervor of the times; and it makes us unwilling to stand against the culture when God’s truth demands it.
But in all things, we have to remember that the Lord God is sovereign. He cannot be pushed aside. Our task today is the same as it has always been: to bring the good news of the gospel to all sorts of people who are looking for satisfaction and peace in all the wrong places. But our task today is also very different, for it will be carried out in an atmosphere that is hostile to the Lord, His Word, and His Church (us!). But take cheer – this is just like the world that the apostles faced in the first century, and they turned the world upside down! Are you ready to see that happen again?
