Jesus is sent from the Sanhedrin to Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor of Palestine. Pilate clearly does not want to deal with Jesus, perhaps because Pilate’s wife had warned him beforehand. Pilate’s examination of Jesus is very different in its subject matter than the trial before the Jewish leaders. Where the Jews tried to trick Jesus into committing blasphemy, Pilate is focused on worldly power. This is a clear opportunity for Jesus to declare to Pilate and to teach us that “My Kingdom is Not of This World” (John 18:28-38)
