We live in a world in which everyone around us seems to be jockeying for positions of greatness. Social media is filled with “influencers,” whose job is to convince others how important they are and to use that influence to promote businesses and products. No shortage of people will declare how they are the “best” at something or even “the greatest of all time.” But here in the Gospel of John, we see one of the most extraordinary men of all time, John the Baptist. In fact, Jesus says, “among those born of women none is greater than John.” (Luke 7:28). Yet John shows us that the way of the Christian is to exalt the Lord Jesus Christ rather than to have concern for one’s own fame. Following our Lord must remember that “He Must Increase” (John 3:22-30).
