At the conclusion of His first week of public ministry, Jesus was at a wedding in a small town with His mother and His disciples. John has shown us already that Jesus does everything with a purpose – nothing is by chance. And so, when the wine at the wedding runs out, His mother tells Him, and we are shown the first of Jesus’ miraculous signs. John is clear throughout His gospel that when Jesus performs miracles, they are “signs,” pointing to who Jesus is. With the transformation of water into wine (the best wine!) Jesus shows that He is the “Lord of Creation” (John 2:1-12).
