The Shadow of Calvary

Topic: AM Service Passage: Matthew 26:36–46
One of the most mysterious and powerful scenes in the New Testament is our Lord Jesus Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane. The mystery of Jesus, being fully God and fully man, is on display before us. The one who planned and knew from all eternity that He would pay the price of His people’s sins is shocked and troubled when the cup of God’s wrath is brought close to Him. We can only imagine how the humanity of Christ recoiled at the idea of draining that cup to the very bottom. If we had to drink that cup of wrath, we would be drinking for all eternity and never reach the bottom. This scene should make clear how horrible sin is. Our sin put the cup in Jesus’ hands. Our sin made Him sorrowful, even to death. We should never take our sin casually. This truth is the light that we see in “The Shadow of Calvary” (Matthew 26:36-45)
