This text contains the final exchange in a series of controversies that occur in the temple area between Jesus and the Jewish leaders in the days leading up to the arrest and crucifixion of our Lord. Here Jesus poses a question to the scribes- ‘How can the Messiah be both the son of David, as well as the Lord of David?’ He quotes from a well-known Psalm- Psalm 110 to compel them to consider who He is. He then gives a solemn warning about the scribes. He says, “beware” of their pride, their corruption and greed, and their hypocrisy. This warning comes to all of us- especially leaders, that our manner of life should be above reproach.
