Mark 11:1-11 marks the beginning of what we could call ‘Act 3’ of the gospel of Mark, where we see the events of the final week of our Lord prior to His crucifixion and resurrection. This event serves as a dramatic introduction to this section, as Christ is heralded by the crowds in Jerusalem. As they sing praise to God, they are either knowingly, or in most cases, unknowingly, proclaiming Christ as King and Messiah.
