Have you ever been drowsy and felt yourself falling asleep? Of course you have! But there is a difference between drifting off to sleep at the end of a long, productive day and falling asleep when you should be awake and alert. There is a time for sleep and a time for being awake. The Apostle Paul uses this principle as an illustration of the Christian life. It is dangerous to be spiritually sleepy when the day is at hand. The night is past, and the day of following the Lord Jesus is before us. We are called to put off sin and put on the Lord Jesus Christ because “The Day is At Hand” (Romans 13:11-14).

Questions for consideration: (1) Why is it important that we see Paul as talking to us today, and not focusing on a far-off future time? (2) In what areas of your life are you in danger of falling into sin if you are not careful and alert? (3) Why is it important for you to remember that you must put on Christ in order to cast off sin?
