The Christian Response to Government

September 8, 2019 Speaker: Fred Greco Series: Romans

Topic: AM Service Passage: Romans 13:1–7

In Romans 13, Paul declares that government exists because it is established by God. The Lord does not give up His sovereignty over all things in the sphere of government. But that leaves Christians with an important question: how do we respond to government? How are we to act in the world so that we acknowledge our ultimate obedience to the Lord? What are we to do when government promotes godlessness or prohibits believers from exercising their faith? We might also ask – if this world is passing away, why is it even important to think about government? Paul answers these questions from the foundation laid by our Lord Jesus Christ in His statement “render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s” (Matt 22:21). It is from God’s Word that we are to find “The Christian’s Response to Government” (Romans 13:1-7).

I. Reasons

II. Responses

III. Restrictions

Questions for consideration: (1) Why is it important for us to see that our response to government is determined by God’s command instead of circumstances? (2) What is the most challenging aspect of relating to government for you as a Christian? (3) What would happen if there were no restrictions on the Christian’s submission to government?
