Marks of the Christian 5: Seeking Peace Part 1

August 18, 2019 Speaker: Fred Greco Series: Romans

Topic: AM Service Passage: Romans 12:14–16

Has anyone ever been against peace? One of the most unanimous aspirations for the world is the spread of peace and the end of conflict. It is easy to be for peace – what is much harder is to live in such a way that promotes peace when it is costly. When we are wronged, or when we think others are getting what we deserve, we quickly lose our longing for peace and look for our self-interest. This is common to all mankind. In fact, what Paul describes here in Romans 12 is that it is only by the power of the Holy Spirit that the Christian can bless his persecutors, do away with envy, or be patient in waiting for God’s vengeance. There is a supernatural aspect to waiting on the Lord. That is “The Marks of the Christian 5: Seeking Peace (Part 1)” (Romans 12:14-16).

I. Facing Persecution
A. Persecution is Real
B. Bless and Not Curse

II. Seeking Unity
A. Thinking of Others
B. Not Thinking Much of Self

III. Repaying Evil with Good
A. Do Away with the Natural Response
B. Living in Peace

IV. Trusting the Lord
A. Leaving Vengeance to God
B. A Testimony for Good

Questions for consideration: (1) What forms of persecution do Christians face today? What is your first reaction when confronted with that? (2) What areas of your life are you tempted to be wise in your own sight? How do you deal with that temptation? (3) Why do you think the Lord is so clear about reserving vengeance for Himself and not allowing the Christian to take vengeance?
