Living in Christ

Topic: AM Service Passage: Romans 6:8–14
Paul reminded us in the beginning of Romans 6 that those who believe in Jesus Christ are free from sin because they have died to sin with Christ. He then continues to describe what union with Christ means for the lives of believers. He summarizes the believer’s life in Christ in a simple statement: “Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him.” At first glance, we may think Paul is referring to the resurrection life we will have after our deaths. But closer inspection reveals that the power of the resurrected Christ is revealed in the present life of the believer. Because Jesus is risen, we can live committed to God and His Word. It is only by the power of God in Christ that this is possible, but because we have been united to Christ, it is possible, and we should live in accordance with the truth that we are “Living in Christ” (Romans 6:8-14).

Questions for consideration: (1) What is the danger of starting with yourself and your behavior and not starting with Christ? (2) What is the danger of not applying Christ’s work to your behavior? What is the hardest area of your life to apply Paul’s commands regarding sin? (3) What is the proper view of grace that you must have, according to Paul? What would be an improper view?
