The Hope of Faith

Topic: AM Service Passage: Romans 4:18–25
In the fourth chapter of Romans, Paul makes very clear that justification is by faith alone. But we might then ask Paul, what does that faith look like? How can I have this faith? So Paul continues with the example of Abraham, showing us that faith is hoping in the promise of God while looking to the God of the promise. When we contemplate the Lord, His ability, and His character, we find that our faith grows strong and the hope that we need is secure in God’s hands. In the midst of trials, testings, and challenges what we most need is “The Hope of Faith” (Romans 4:18-25).
I. Faith in God’s Word
A. Faith in God’s Word Alone
B. Faith Despite Appearances
II. Faith Instead of Doubt
A. Faith in a Worthy God
B. Faith in an Able God
III. Abraham’s Faith and Ours
A. Only One Way
B. The Mature Expression of Faith
Questions for consideration: (1) What are some of the things in life that you see that make it hard to trust God? How do you deal with that? (2) Why do you think Paul is so emphatic about the object of Abraham’s faith instead of the nature of his faith? (3) In what ways is the faith that we are called to like Abraham’s? In what ways is it different?
