Dead in Sin

June 19, 2016 Speaker: Fred Greco Series: Ephesians

Topic: AM Service Passage: Ephesians 2:1–3

The diverse way in which we view humanity and a person can be remarkable. Most people have a vague sense that somehow people in general are good; in this great sea of humanity we can place ourselves and feel good about who we are. But the problem is that when we look at a person next to us, our idea of the vague goodness of mankind vanishes. We no longer see humanity, but we see the person who has lied to us, or the person who is trying to get the better of us. When life gets specific, it is impossible not to see the problem with people. The news and our neighborhoods are filled with stories that belie the goodness of people. Even worse – when we examine our own lives in specific detail, we see all the times we have failed to be kind, do good, or be honest. The Apostle Paul describes for us why this is true: it is that each and every person outside of Christ is dead in his trespasses and sins. We are by nature not kind and good, but selfish and self-centered. Paul wants us to understand the truth of our problem so that we can see the solution God has provided, Jesus Christ. We will never know our need of Jesus unless we see that we are “Dead in Sin” (Ephesians 2:1-3).

I. Who Are We?
A. Our Nature
B. Our Will

II. How Are We Enslaved?
A. To the World
B. To the Devil
C. To the Flesh

III. Where are We Going?
A. Objects of Wrath
B. Objects of Grace

Questions for consideration: (1) Why is it important to understand that we are dead in our trespasses and sins outside of Christ? How does that effect the way we interact with others? (2) What particular aspects of the world and the flesh cause you the most difficulty in everyday life? What is the most troublesome attack the devil makes on your life and faith? (3) In what ways each day do you think about your eternal destiny? How does that affect your actions? The way you speak?
