An Inheritance and Guarantee

Topic: AM Service Passage: Ephesians 1:11–14
The work of the Holy Spirit is sometimes mysterious, often difficult to comprehend, and a challenge to describe. This has led some to flights of fancy, and it has led others to downplay or ignore the work of the Spirit. But the Apostle Paul, in his great sentence of praise for the work of the Triune God, does not leave out the Holy Spirit. Paul reminds us of the great and necessary work of the Holy Spirit in the application of our salvation; he also encourages us to look to the Spirit for assurance that we belong to the Lord. We must look to the Spirit to understand both our own redemption and the building up of the Church. How blessed we are to know that the Holy Spirit has been given to all who believe on Christ as “An Inheritance and Guarantee” (Ephesians 1:11-14).
I. The Spirit Applies Our Salvation

Questions for consideration: (1) What does it mean for your everyday life that the Bible is God’s Word? How has God’s Word changed your decisions and worldview? (2) What does it mean for the mission of the Church that the Spirit brings unity through the Church? How should that affect the way you live with your neighbors? (3) Can you think of a time in your life when you needed the comfort of the Spirit’s guarantee of your salvation?
