One of the most common areas of the Bible that people are fascinated with is attempts to predict the future. And this is most common when current events frighten us – we wonder whether the end of the world is coming, or if somehow we can be delivered from hard times by the return of Jesus. When people desire to peer into God’s timeline, they forget Jesus’ words: “Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour” (Matthew 25:13). But just because we are unable to write a timeline of the future, that does not mean we should ignore it either. Jesus warned His disciples about the coming judgment upon Jerusalem, not primarily for their physical safety, but because they needed to be on guard against lies and pretenders. This is just as true for us today. There are indeed wars and rumors of wars, nations against nations, and persecution of Christ’s Church. To be on guard and to stand fast for the truth of God’s Word, it is imperative that we see the “Signs of the Times” (Luke 21:5-24).

Questions for consideration: (1) What about the world today has you concerned or worried? What would Jesus say to you about that? (2) How does this passage challenge our notions about the Christian life? Why is that good? (3) How can Jesus’ words of comfort help you in your present difficulties? In light of perceived dangers?
