Throughout His ministry, Jesus was not only attacked for His teaching and mission, but also faced mockery and derision. The Sadducees had no use for the “fanciful” (as they viewed) teaching about the resurrection from the dead, and so they worked hard to come up with a question designed to make Jesus look foolish. Surely Jesus would not be so backward and unenlightened as to believe something like the resurrection? To test Him, they made up a story about one bride for seven brothers and waited to see if Jesus could escape. But while the Sadducees prided themselves on understanding the culture, they failed to understand the most fundamental promise of God’s Word, that “he is the God of the living.” They are a good example of how those who resist Jesus are “Still Missing the Point” (Luke 20:27-44).
I. Missing the Point About the Resurrection
A. About Its Truth
B. About Its Nature
II. Missing the Point About God
A. About the Nature of God
B. About the Promises of God
III. Missing the Point About Christ
A. About His Person
B. About His Mission
Questions for consideration: (1) Why do you think the Sadducees were so opposed to the doctrine of the resurrection? Why are so many now? (2) Why is it important for you today to hear and believe the words that God is “the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob?” (3) The Sadducees were looking for a certain type of Christ. What type are people looking for today? What are you looking for?
