Another week is about to begin, and the time for going to worship has arrived. As you think about worship, does it seem to you like a break in the “real world,” when you put your normal life on pause? Maybe it seems like a time to reinvigorate yourself for the challenges of the week, or maybe it seems like an obligation you have to fulfill before you go on with the rest of life. Even though the first reason sounds more pious than the second, in reality both treat the worship of God and following Jesus as an interruption into the stream of life. But what would your life be like if all of the time you were focused on follow Jesus? What if we thought about the costs that following Jesus would impose on our jobs, our finances, our relationships, and our lives, and yet we chose to follow him anyway? What if we felt inadequate for the tasks Jesus called us to, and yet we followed Him anyway, trusting in His provision? This is a picture of what we see in the passage before us, “Are You Willing to Follow Jesus?” (Luke 5:1-11) There is a very practical impact to seeing the disciples toil without visible benefit, and then, just as they are despairing, realizing that their efforts are not what Jesus wants.
I. A True Disciple Listens to Jesus
II. A True Disciple Trusts Jesus
III. A True Disciple Sees Jesus
IV. A True Disciple is Changed by Jesus
Questions for consideration: (1) How does your desire for God’s Word show itself in your life? (2) What areas of your life have you been reluctant to hand over to Jesus? (3) What needs to change in your life for you to truly follow Jesus?
