I. Introduction
Jesus is the best priest of all!
II. Melchizedek was a great Old Testament priest!
A. He was both a king and a priest of God (vs. 1)
B. Scripture reveals him uniquely, as possessing a unique priesthood (vs. 3)
C. He blessed Abraham and received tithes from the Patriarch (vs. 1-2)
III. Melchizedek’s priesthood was superior to that of Levi
A. He was a king and a priest both; Levi was not (vs. 5)
B. His priesthood was eternal; Levi’s was not (vs. 3 & 23)
A. Abraham paid tithes to him; and, in Abraham, Levi did too (vs. 9-10)
B. He blessed both Abraham and Levi (vs. 6-7)
IV. Jesus is a priest according to the order of Melchizedek.
A. Jesus is a divine person and therefore possesses an eternal priesthood (vs. 16)
B. Jesus always lives to intercede for us and can thus save us forever (vs. 25)
C. Jesus’ priesthood is by divine oath, not just divine statement (vs. 20-21)
D. Jesus is our prophet, priest, and king, possessing not just one but three offices!
V. Conclusion
Questions for consideration: (1) What made Melchizedek to be great? (2) What made Melchizedek better than Levi? (3) What made Jesus better than Levi? (4) Why are you thankful Jesus is your priest?
