Each in turn, Isaac, Esau, Rebekah, and Jacob, attempt to hold onto what they believe is their control of life and events, in spite of the power of God. The Lord shows us in this story of the blessing of Jacob that no one can stop His will, and that what He has willed is ultimately for our good and His glory.
I. The Foolishness of Controlling God
A. Isaac’s Willfulness
B. Rebekah’s Rebellion
C. Jacob’s Deception
II. God Shows His Control
A. Over Esau’s Insincerity
B. Over Jacob and Rebekah’s Manipulation
C. Over Isaac’s Disobedience
Questions for consideration: (1) In what ways have you tried to take control contrary to what you know God’s will is from His Word? (2) What are the “unexpected consequences” of the sin in your life? The sin in our nation? The sin in the Church? (3) How does this picture of the sovereignty of God help us in our witness to the world around us?
