1 Samuel is the story of the people of God during the establishment of the kingdom of Israel. From the birth of the prophet Samuel, to Israel's cry to "be like all the nations" by having a king (1 Sam. 8:20), to the crowning of Saul "from his shoulders upward he was taller than any of the people," to David's slaying of Goliath and eventual rise to the kingship, this book is a testimony to the providential power and care of God over His people, often in spite of their disobedience.
