A Poor Widow’s Offering

Topic: PM Service Passage: Mark 12:41–44
This text contains a prime example of whole-hearted devotion to God. The poor widow who gives her all is contrasted with the proud and self-seeking scribes who “devour widow’s houses” and simply want earthly recognition. In giving this teaching immediately prior to the Olivet Discourse, Jesus is showing the coming judgment upon Israel’s leaders; as well as giving us an example of how we should give out of poverty. Whether we are rich or poor, we can give out of poverty as we recognize that all we have comes from the good hand of the Father. He owns it all, and we are merely His stewards.
I. The Observation
A. Christ sees your giving
B. Christ sees your heart
II. The Offering
A. The offering of the rich
B. The offering of the widow
III. The Assessment
A. Giving out of abundance
B. Giving out of poverty
Questions:
1. Would your giving look different if you reflected more upon the fact that Christ is observing your heart as you give?
2. What did the widow’s sacrifice reveal about her heart?
3. Can you give “out of poverty” at any level of income? How?
4. What should be the driving force behind our generosity?
