The Betrayal of Jesus

October 25, 2015 Speaker: Fred Greco Series: Luke

Topic: AM Service Passage: Luke 22:35–53

None of us likes to be taken advantage of. In fact, because much of what we do in life is preparation to protect ourselves from harm, one of the hardest things to deal with is unexpected harm that comes from someone we trust. History does not treat traitors kindly – just ask Benedict Arnold, one of the greatest American generals ever, whose name is now only synonymous with traitor. Traitors have their motives and excuses, including being wronged by others. We may not agree with betrayal, but we can understand the motive of one who has been hurt. This truth makes the betrayal of Jesus even more puzzling. Jesus never sinned against anyone; He never did anyone unjust harm. Why could the Pharisees not see that? What could have caused Judas to betray Him? The answer, the Bible tells us, is found not in a profile of Judas’ psyche, but instead in the sin that we have committed. Jesus was betrayed because He chose to die – to die for the sins of His people. When we come to trust Jesus Christ we see just how much He loved us. He loved us enough to die; He loved us enough to die a shameful death of a criminal after being betrayed. We see the love of Christ in “The Betrayal of Jesus” (Luke 22:35-53).

I. Jesus Prepares His People (22:35-38)
A. For a Hostile World
B. For the Fulfillment of Promise

II. Jesus Confronts the Cross (22:39-46)
A. Struggle
B. Suffering
C. Submission

III. Jesus is in Control (22:47-53)
A. When Others Act
B. In the Darkest Hour

Questions for consideration: (1) What about the world today is hostile? How do you think Jesus wants us to be prepared for that hostility? (2) Have you ever struggled with doing what you knew was the right thing? How can Jesus’ prayer help you in obeying the Lord? (3) What is the hardest thing about not being in control? How does this passage help us to face those dark, helpless times?
