"He is no fool who gives up what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose." — Jim Elliot, missionary martyr
An essential part of being a follower of the Lord Jesus Christ is to think beyond yourself. The Lord calls us to show compassion and love to others, and to bring the good news of the gospel to all parts of the world. This is true not just for individuals, but for congregations as well.
In furtherance of our commitment to and focus on missions to the U.S.-Mexico border, during summer of 2013 a team from Christ Church went to Laredo, Texas to assist the evangelistic outreach of our sister congregation, Iglesia La Vid, and also to affect the participants' hearts for the Lord.
Iglesia La Vid is a steadily-growing mission church of the Presbyterian Church of America (PCA) that reaches out to the rising Hispanic population on the border with the gospel of Jesus Christ. Christ Church will be partnering with Mission to the World (MTW) to help Iglesia La Vid with their Vacation Bible School and construction projects at the church.
Going on a mission trip is a challenge, and an opportunity to grow in the Lord. It is an opportunity to serve others and to be put out of your comfort zone. As we see from missionary martyr, Jim Elliot, we are far more blessed by putting ourselves out there in service for the Lord, rather than being satisfied with the little we have in this world. Be prepared to be challenged, have your heart revealed, and have your eyes opened to what the Lord is doing in other parts of the world. Who knows? You may find yourself more blessed than those whom we are going to help!
