Ligonier Pastors Conference

By Pastor Fred Greco | October 22, 2008

Pastor Carroll and I are on the middle of a wonderful week at the Pastors’ Conference. So far it has been a time of refreshment, good conversation, and encouraging teaching.

The main speakers are RC Sproul, Sinclair Ferguson, and Steve Lawson. It is amazing to me how different their styles are, and yet each is powerful in his own way. The main theme has been the glory of God and how that is manifested in our worship, preaching and teaching, among other things.

I wanted to thank all of you at Christ Church for giving me the opportunity to take the week of “study leave” away from you, and be refreshed. Although I am enjoying myself, I do miss being with you all, and look forward to being back. I will try, as time permits, to blog a bit about the conference itself. I believe that you can watch a webcast of the conference by going to the Ligonier website: http://www.ligonier.org

I would echo your comments, Fred. A theme running through the conference is “The Eclipse of God” which refers to the fact that to a large degree in the evangelical church in the USA today the focus of preaching, teaching and programs is Man, not God. We have been reminded that in our worship our goal is to go deep into the truth of a great, sovereign, holy and transcendent God, lift up praise that is worthy of Him and then go out into the world to proclaim His name to the nations. Sadly, today the church is preoccupied with growth in numbers (people and income) and trivializes the message of the gospel to what meets felt needs of the general population.
I believe we will return to Katy tomorrow with renewed energy to lift up the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.

    Pastors Fred and John,

I am a repeat and regular Christ Church visitor… and here I was wanting to inform both of you regarding the ‘Ligonier Ministries’ and its Conferences, and now I see that you are both way ahead of me in this.

I am thrilled beyond belief that I have now a congregation to fellowship with that is involved with such conferences with speakers including RC Sproul, John MacArthur and the like… I love these pastor/teachers.

Prior to visiting Christ Church I was convinced that I would never find a congregation (short of moving to California and attending John MacArthur’s Grace Church) that even heard that these guys even existed.

I trust you can both understand my excitement about all this!

    Very Best Regards,
    John Miller

Thanks, John. We are delighted to have you a part of our fellowship, too. I will miss worshipping with you all tomorrow as I am visiting my daughter and her family in FL. I expect to be visit a new PCA church plant in Tallahassee reaching out to the African American community. See you soon.
